Chapter 3 - THE WOMAN WHO HAD BEEN PREPARING TO LEAVE

I hadn't decided to leave Alexander that night.
I'd decided three weeks earlier.
The seafood dinner had simply confirmed what I already knew.
My husband had stopped seeing me as a person.
He saw a wife.
A name.
A place at his table.
A woman who was supposed to smile beside him at charity galas and remain quiet when his family insulted her.
But I had been Claire Bennett long before I became Claire Moretti.
And I intended to remember her.
My attorney, Rebecca Hale, had helped me prepare.
She specialized in complicated divorces involving wealthy and dangerous spouses.
She hadn't been impressed by Alexander's reputation.
When I first entered her office, she asked one question.
“Are you safe?”
I hesitated.
Then answered:
“I don't know.”
Rebecca nodded.
“Then we plan carefully.”
We documented my finances.
Reviewed the prenuptial agreement.
Prepared a petition addressing the marriage, my pregnancy, and the need for appropriate legal protections.
I opened an independent bank account.
Collected my identification and medical records.
And arranged temporary accommodation in a building Alexander didn't control.
I also contacted my older brother, Nathan Bennett.
Nathan and I hadn't been close for years.
Alexander disliked him.
Said he was judgmental.
Said he didn't understand the Moretti family.
But when I called Nathan and said I needed help, he didn't ask what I'd done wrong.
He asked where I was.
Now, as my taxi pulled away from the restaurant, I called him.
He answered immediately.
“Claire?”
My voice broke.
“I did it.”
A pause.
Then:
“You left?”
I looked down at my stomach.
“Yes.”
Nathan exhaled.
“Good.”
Tears filled my eyes.
He continued.
“I'm waiting at the apartment.”
May you like
I closed my eyes.
And for the first time in months, I believed I might be okay.
