Chapter 4 - THE BABY WHO CHANGED EVERYTHING

Three days after I left, I had an ultrasound.

Nathan drove me.

He waited in the hallway while the technician prepared the room.

I lay on the examination table, staring at the ceiling.

The familiar guilt returned.

Alexander should have been here.

He was the baby's father.

He had a right to know about the pregnancy.

But I also had a right to attend a medical appointment without being frightened of another argument.

The technician smiled.

“Ready?”

I nodded.

The screen flickered.

Then there was my baby.

A tiny profile.

A curved spine.

One small hand lifted near the face.

My throat tightened.

The technician pointed.

“Everything looks reassuring today.”

I began crying.

Not because something was wrong.

Because something was finally right.

When the appointment ended, I stepped into the hallway.

Nathan stood immediately.

“Well?”

I smiled through tears.

“Healthy.”

He grinned.

“Good.”

Then he hugged me.

I held him tightly.

For years, I'd been surrounded by people who claimed to protect me.

But protection had always come with rules.

Expectations.

Obligations.

Nathan simply held me.

May you like

And said:

“Whatever happens next, you're not doing it alone.”
