Chapter 2 - THE WRIST HE SHOULD NEVER HAVE TOUCHED

Alexander didn't read the divorce papers immediately.

He stood at the head of the dining table, staring at the empty doorway.

His mother, Eleanor Moretti, was the first to speak.

“Well,” she said sharply, “that was theatrical.”

Sophia lowered her eyes.

“I never wanted to cause trouble.”

Alexander turned toward her.

“Don't.”

She blinked.

“Alexander?”

He looked at the untouched plate where Claire should have been sitting.

Plain bread.

A few slices of cucumber.

A glass of water.

Then his gaze moved to the platters of shrimp, crab, and lobster.

He frowned.

“Why wasn't Claire eating?”

Eleanor sighed.

“She's pregnant. Women become difficult about food.”

Something unsettled him.

He remembered Claire once refusing seafood at a restaurant.

He remembered her carrying an emergency medication injector.

He remembered—

His stomach dropped.

“She has an allergy.”

The room went silent.

Sophia looked up.

“What?”

Alexander stared at the table.

“Claire is allergic to shellfish.”

Eleanor waved a hand.

“She's always been dramatic about it.”

Alexander turned toward his mother.

“It's a serious allergy.”

His voice was suddenly cold.

Eleanor's expression changed.

He looked toward Sophia.

Then at the food he'd personally ordered.

He had remembered Sophia's favorite dishes.

The crab she loved.

The lobster prepared with lemon butter.

The scallops she always ordered when they were younger.

But he had forgotten that his pregnant wife couldn't safely eat much of what he'd placed on the table.

His phone vibrated.

A message from his security chief.

Mrs. Moretti declined transportation. She left in a taxi.

Alexander stared.

Then looked down at his right hand.

The hand he'd used to grab Claire.

He remembered her face.

Not fear.

Not anger.

Something worse.

Disappointment so complete that she no longer seemed surprised by him.

He picked up the divorce papers.

And for the first time that evening, he began to read.
