Chapter 7 - THE MAFIA BOSS WHO FINALLY UNDERSTOOD

Alexander sat alone in his office.
He thought about Claire.
The first time he'd met her.
The way she'd laughed at his terrible jokes.
The way she'd held his hand when his father died.
The way she'd believed there was still a good man beneath the violence of his world.
He remembered telling her he wasn't ready for children.
He remembered her face falling.
He remembered promising someday.
Then he remembered Oliver.
The birthdays.
The school events.
The hospital visits.
The little boy calling him Alexander.
He'd given another child the attention Claire had begged him to give their future family.
Not because he was incapable of fatherhood.
Because he'd allowed Sophia to occupy a place that should never have come at his wife's expense.
Alexander looked toward the photograph of Claire on his desk.
May you like
Then whispered:
“I failed you.”
