Chapter 3 - THE HOUSE THAT WAS NEVER MINE

Alexander returned to the beachside mansion.

The house he'd bought for Claire.

At least, that was what he'd told her.

Now he walked through the rooms and saw them differently.

Pink curtains.

Pink bedding.

Pink furniture.

A children's bedroom filled with toys meant for Sophia's son.

Alexander stopped in the doorway.

Marco stood behind him.

“Boss?”

Alexander looked around.

“Who chose all this?”

Marco hesitated.

“Miss Reynolds.”

Alexander stared.

“What?”

“Sophia helped with the decorating.”

Alexander looked toward the pink bedspread.

Then remembered Claire standing in the room months earlier.

She'd smiled politely.

Said it was beautiful.

He'd believed her.

He hadn't asked what she wanted.

He'd never asked.

He looked toward Marco.

“Did Claire like this house?”

Marco said nothing.

Alexander's jaw tightened.

“Tell me.”

Marco swallowed.

“She told Mrs. Carter she felt like a guest.”

Alexander closed his eyes.

May you like

A guest.

In the home he'd supposedly bought for his wife.
