Chapter 15 - THE FAMILY THAT BEGAN AGAIN

Three years after Claire left the hospital with her newborn daughter, she stood in the garden of her little house.

Evelyn was running across the grass.

Her dark hair bounced.

Her laughter filled the afternoon air.

Alexander arrived for his scheduled visit.

He looked different now.

Less commanding.

More patient.

He knelt when Evelyn spotted him.

“Daddy!”

She ran into his arms.

He lifted her.

Spun her gently.

And laughed.

Claire watched from the porch.

For three years, Alexander had worked to become a better father.

He attended parenting classes.

Respected the custody agreement.

Showed up when he promised.

And never again tried to control Claire's life.

Their divorce had been finalized two years earlier.

It had been painful.

But necessary.

Alexander set Evelyn down.

She ran toward the garden.

Then he looked at Claire.

“Thank you.”

She smiled faintly.

“For what?”

“For letting me be her father.”

Claire nodded.

“She's your daughter.”

He swallowed.

“I know.”

Silence.

Then he said:

“I still think about that day.”

Claire looked at him.

“The hospital?”

He nodded.

“Yes.”

She looked toward Evelyn.

“So do I.”

Alexander's eyes filled.

“I wish I could change it.”

Claire smiled sadly.

“I know.”

He swallowed.

“Are you happy?”

Claire looked around.

At the house.

The garden.

The sunlight.

Her daughter.

Her life.

Then smiled.

“Yes.”

Alexander nodded.

For a moment, pain crossed his face.

Then he smiled too.

“Good.”

Evelyn called from the grass.

“Daddy! Come play!”

Alexander laughed.

“Coming, sweetheart!”

He walked toward her.

Claire watched.

Then looked toward the sky.

Three years earlier, she'd left a hospital with a newborn baby and a broken heart.

She'd been terrified.

Alone.

And unsure whether she could build a life without Alexander.

Now she knew.

She could.

She had.

And she would continue.

Not as Mrs. Moretti.

Not as the woman Alexander had failed to choose.

But as Claire Bennett.

A mother.

A daughter.

A woman who had finally learned to choose herself.

She stepped into the sunlight.

May you like

Evelyn's laughter followed her.

And for the first time in years, Claire didn't look back.
