Chapter 14 - THE CHOICE HE COULD NOT MAKE FOR HER

Alexander visited Claire one evening.
Evelyn was asleep.
They sat on the porch.
For a long time, neither spoke.
Then Alexander said:
“I still love you.”
Claire looked down.
“I know.”
He swallowed.
“Is there any chance?”
She looked toward the garden.
Then answered:
“I don't know.”
Alexander nodded.
“I'll wait.”
Claire looked at him.
“No.”
He frowned.
She continued.
“Don't wait for me.”
His eyes filled.
“Claire—”
“Become a better man because it's the right thing to do.”
A pause.
“Not because you think it will bring me back.”
Alexander closed his eyes.
Then nodded.
“You're right.”
Claire smiled sadly.
“I hope you find peace.”
He looked at her.
“And you?”
May you like
She smiled.
“I already have.”
