Chapter 12 - THE MAN WHO LEARNED TO LET GO

Alexander stopped trying to force Claire to return.

He began attending parenting classes.

Worked with a counselor.

And followed the temporary custody arrangement.

He sent updates through attorneys.

Asked permission before visits.

And stopped appearing unexpectedly.

One afternoon, he met Claire at a park.

Evelyn slept in her stroller.

Alexander looked at Claire.

“I'm sorry.”

She nodded.

“I know.”

He swallowed.

“I thought I was protecting you.”

Claire looked toward the trees.

“You were protecting the life you wanted.”

He closed his eyes.

She continued.

“And I was expected to accept whatever was left.”

Alexander nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

Silence.

Then he whispered:

“Do you think you could ever forgive me?”

Claire looked at him.

“Maybe.”

His eyes filled.

“But forgiveness doesn't mean I'll come back.”

Alexander nodded.

May you like

“I understand.”

And for the first time, he didn't argue.
