Chapter 6 - The Awakening of Clara Vance

At 5:15 AM, the storm clouds parted, casting pale amber dawn light across the silk canopy of the master bed.
Clara’s eyes slowly opened.
The agonizing fire in her chest had dulled to a faint ache. She was no longer on cold linoleum; she was enveloped in warm, luxurious down. The scent of Italian cedar and sandalwood wrapped around her senses.
Beside the bed, sitting in an armchair with his head resting near her hand, was Matteo. His hand was firmly clasped around hers, his fingers warm, protective, and unyielding.
“Matteo...” Clara whispered.
Matteo’s head lifted instantly. When his bloodshot, exhausted eyes met hers, the feared mafia don broke down. He brought her pale knuckles to his lips, kissing her fingers with reverent, shaking tenderness.
“You’re awake,” Matteo choked out, tears trailing down his stubbled cheek. “You’re safe, Clara. You’re home.”
Clara tried to sit up, her heart racing with maternal panic. “Lily... where is Lily?!”
“Mama!”
A small voice giggled from the doorway.
Lily ran across the plush carpet wearing a brand-new pink cashmere sweater, holding her stuffed rabbit, and climbed onto the bed, throwing her arms around Clara’s neck.
Clara buried her face in her daughter’s hair, weeping tears of overwhelming, unburdened relief. “My baby... my brave little girl.”
“Daddy gave me warm pancakes, Mommy,” Lily beamed, pointing a tiny finger at Matteo. “He said you're never going back to the basement.”
Clara looked up at Matteo, her eyes filling with four years of buried sorrow and fear. “Matteo... Lucian threatened to kill you. He showed me the car bombs... I had to leave to keep you alive. And then I found out about Lily.”

Matteo climbed onto the bed, wrapping his powerful arms around both Clara and their daughter, pulling them into a fierce, unbreakable embrace.
“You protected me, and you protected our child,” Matteo whispered against her temple. “Now it is my turn to burn the world down to protect you.”
