Chapter 1 - The Barefoot Knock at Midnight

At midnight, a barefoot three-year-old girl crossed a mafia boss’s mansion alone and knocked on the one door everyone had warned her never to approach. “Please,” she whispered when it opened. “My mommy won’t wake up.”

Forty-seven seconds earlier, Lily had been standing over her mother’s body in the small, unheated servants’ quarters on the basement level.

“Mama?”

She had shaken Clara’s cold shoulder. Nothing.

“Mommy?”

Still nothing. Lily even sang the little lullaby Clara always used when sleep was hard to find. But tonight, the melody didn't work backward. Her mother remained motionless against the worn linoleum floor, her breathing shallow, erratic, and frighteningly faint.

Lily was only three, but she remembered the golden rule Clara had repeated every night before tucking her into bed: If there is ever an emergency, find help.

So Lily turned the brass knob and stepped into the forbidden shadows of the estate.

Her mother worked as a night maid inside the sprawling, fortified stone manor of the Moretti Syndicate in northern New Jersey—a place where certain marble corridors were heavily restricted and certain men were never to be looked in the eye. But rules meant nothing when Mama wouldn't open her eyes.

Lily walked barefoot across the freezing flagstones, clutching her worn plush rabbit with both arms.

She tapped on the first door. Nothing. A second door. Silence.

By the seventh corridor, tears blurred her vision. The mansion felt monstrously vast. Massive oil paintings of stern men in dark suits stared down from the oak walls. Every tiny patter of her bare feet sounded like thunder.

Finally, she reached a secluded corridor bathed in the warm amber glow of golden sconces. Deep velvet carpet muffled her footsteps. There were only three polished mahogany doors along this wing, guarded by the heavy aura of supreme authority.

Lily stopped before the massive double doors at the far end.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

No answer. She banged harder with her tiny fist.

“Hello? Please... I need help.”

A heavy bolt slid back. The latch clicked open.

Standing in the doorway was a tall, imposing man in tailored black trousers and an unbuttoned white dress shirt, his sleeves rolled to his forearms, displaying dark intricate tattoos. His chiseled jaw was tight, his dark eyes cold enough to freeze the blood of seasoned hitmen.

Everyone in the estate spoke of him in terrified whispers as Mr. Matteo Moretti.

Her mother called him something far more solemn: The man you must never disturb.

Matteo’s dark eyes dropped from the empty doorway down to the tiny girl in faded cotton pajamas and bare feet on the Persian runner.

His expression softened by a fraction. “What happened, little one?”

Lily swallowed back her tears, holding up her stuffed rabbit. “My mommy fell down. She won't wake up.”

Matteo’s gaze sharpened. “What is your mother’s name?”

May you like

“Clara.”

Matteo went completely, terrifyingly still.
