Chapter 4 - The Poison in the Porcelain Cup

By 2:30 AM, the penthouse suite of the Moretti estate had been transformed into an advanced critical care unit.

Two IV lines dripped detoxifying agents and saline into Clara’s veins. A cardiac monitor hummed with a steady, reassuring rhythm as Dr. Rossi completed the preliminary blood mass spectrometry analysis.

Dr. Rossi stepped into the adjoining study, where Matteo stood by the panoramic glass wall watching the rain lash against the New Jersey hills. Lily was asleep on the leather sofa nearby, wrapped in a plush cashmere blanket, holding Matteo’s heavy platinum watch in her small hand.

“What is the toxin, Antonio?” Matteo asked, not turning around.

“Arsenic trioxide combined with digitalis glycosides,” Dr. Rossi reported grimly. “Administered in microscopic, daily doses over the past six weeks. It was designed to mimic chronic autoimmune fatigue and sudden heart failure. If she had remained in that basement another three hours, the cardiac arrest would have been irreversible.”

Matteo’s glass of scotch shattered in his bare hand. Bourbon and blood dripped across the hardwood floor, but he didn't flinch.

“Where was it introduced?”

“In her morning herbal tea supply in the servants' kitchen,” Dr. Rossi answered. “The canister was spiked with concentrated powder.”

Marco pushed open the study doors, his tactical vest splattered with rain, holding a blue leather folder and a handcuffed older woman.

It was Agnes, the sixty-year-old head housekeeper who had managed the estate’s domestic operations for eight years.

Agnes was trembling violently, her hair disheveled, weeping in hysterical terror as two guards forced her to her knees before Matteo’s desk.

“Mr. Moretti! I swear on my mother’s grave, I didn't know!” Agnes shrieked. “A man met me in Newark three months ago! He gave me fifty thousand dollars in cash to hire a woman named Clara Vance and ensure she was assigned exclusively to the basement quarters!”

Matteo walked slowly over to her, his voice dropping into a register so cold that the temperature in the room plummeted.

“Who was the man, Agnes?”

“He... he wore a gold signet ring with a falcon crest!” Agnes wept. “He said if I asked questions, he would burn my family’s house down! He provided the tea canister last week!”

Matteo’s eyes narrowed into slits of lethal recognition.

The falcon crest belonged to Lucian Rossi—the ruthless head of the rival Manhattan syndicate who had tried to seize Moretti’s shipping ports four years ago.
