Chapter 2 - The Name That Froze the Empire

For three agonizing seconds, the corridor plunged into an absolute, suffocating silence.
Matteo crouched down until his piercing dark eyes were level with Lily’s wide, hazel gaze. He noticed the delicate curve of her nose, the soft chestnut curls framing her pale face, and the small, star-shaped birthmark just beneath her left earlobe—details that sent a seismic shockwave straight through his chest.
“Clara what?” Matteo whispered, his voice trembling with an emotion his men had never witnessed in ten years of underworld rule.
“Clara Vance,” Lily whispered.
Every trace of sleep, fatigue, and indifference vanished from the mafia boss’s face.
Four years ago, Clara Vance—the only woman Matteo had ever loved, the daughter of an honorable independent architect—had vanished without a trace forty-eight hours before their private engagement ceremony. For four years, Matteo had burned through private intelligence agencies, international investigators, and millions in cash searching across two continents, believing she had been abducted or murdered by rival factions.
He reached into his pocket, pulled out his encrypted satellite phone, and barked a single command in rapid Italian: “Marco. Sound the Level-One medical alert. Bring Dr. Rossi to the servants' quarters immediately. Seal all perimeter gates. Nobody leaves this estate alive without my personal clearance.”
Within thirty seconds, heavy oak doors flew open down every corridor.
Armed security operators in black tactical gear sprinted down the stairwells. The entire estate shifted from silent luxury into a fortress on wartime footing.
Matteo gently scooped Lily into his arms, lifting her against his chest. Her small arms wrapped instinctively around his neck, burying her face into his shoulder.
Before taking a single step toward the elevator, Matteo turned to his chief enforcer, Marco, who was staring in absolute shock.
“How long,” Matteo asked, his voice low, guttural, and vibrating with lethal fury, “has Clara been working as a maid under my own roof?”

Marco’s face drained of every drop of color. “Boss... the domestic staff intake is handled exclusively by Housekeeper Agnes. We never cross-check the basement roster.”
Matteo’s jaw tightened into iron. “If a single hair on Clara’s head is damaged, Agnes will not see the sunrise. Move!”
