Chapter 5 - The Syndicate's Traitor

The pieces of the four-year puzzle snapped together with horrifying clarity.
Four years ago, Lucian Rossi had intercepted Clara on her way to Matteo’s villa. He had showed her surveillance photographs of Matteo’s inner circle, threatening to plant a car bomb under Matteo’s vehicle and slaughter his family unless she disappeared completely from his life.
To protect the man she loved, Clara had vanished into the shadows of upstate New York, discovering weeks later that she was carrying Matteo’s child.
When her savings ran out and Lucian’s bounty hunters closed in on her location six months ago, Clara made the ultimate gamble: she hid in plain sight. She assumed that the safest place in the world for Matteo’s daughter was beneath Matteo’s own roof, disguised as an invisible domestic maid where rival families would never think to look.
She had endured months of scrubbing floors, living on kitchen scraps in a dark cellar, all to ensure Lily slept behind Matteo’s perimeter guards.
“She sacrificed everything to keep our daughter safe,” Matteo whispered, looking toward the sleeping child on the sofa.
Matteo turned his gaze upon Agnes.
“Take her down to the holding cells,” Matteo instructed Marco calmly. “Keep her alive until federal investigators take her confession. Now assemble the Capos. We ride on Manhattan at dawn.”
“Boss,” Marco hesitated. “Lucian Rossi has eighty armed men at his compound in Long Island.”

Matteo pulled a heavy customized automatic firearm from his desk drawer, racking the slide with a clean, metallic clack.
“Then bring a hundred.”
