Chapter 9 - THE BETRAYAL AT THE BREAKFAST TABLE

Roman confronted his father's former adviser, Vincent Bellini.
Vincent had worked for the Costa family for thirty years.
He knew every secret.
Every deal.
Every betrayal.
Roman placed Leila Rahman's photograph on the table.
“Tell me what happened.”
Vincent stared.
Then laughed.
“Ancient history.”
Roman's expression hardened.
“Not to her daughter.”
Vincent's smile faded.
Roman continued.
“Leila discovered something.”
Vincent looked away.
“What?”
Silence.
Roman leaned forward.
“Vincent.”
The older man sighed.
“Your father was moving money through humanitarian shipments.”
Roman stared.
“What kind of shipments?”
Vincent hesitated.
Then answered.
“Stolen medical supplies. Counterfeit pharmaceuticals. Things that should never have crossed a border.”
Roman's jaw tightened.
“And Leila found out.”
Vincent nodded.
“She threatened to expose him.”
Roman stared.
“What happened to her?”
Vincent looked down.
Then whispered, “Your father ordered the car sabotaged.”

Roman went still.
For the first time in his life, he wished he could forget his own surname.
