Chapter 14 - THE FLOWERS HE DIDN'T BUY

Two years later, Roman proposed.
Not with a room full of roses.
Not with a diamond necklace.
Not with a lavish public display.
He proposed in the community garden.
Sadi was kneeling beside a row of pink carnations.
Roman approached.
She smiled.
“You're late.”
He laughed.
“Traffic.”
She stood.
Then noticed the small velvet box in his hand.
Her breath caught.
“Roman.”
He smiled nervously.
“I know.”
She laughed through tears.
He lowered himself onto one knee.
“Sadi Rahman.”
Her eyes filled.
“The first time I saw you with flowers, I thought I had the right to decide who could give them to you.”
He swallowed.
“I was wrong.”
Sadi began crying.
Roman continued.
“You taught me that love isn't possession.”
“That kindness isn't weakness.”
“And that a woman who chooses to stay is worth more than any woman forced to.”
He opened the box.
Inside was a simple diamond ring.
“Will you marry me?”
Sadi smiled through tears.
“Yes.”
Roman's eyes filled.
“Really?”
She laughed.
“Yes, Roman.”
He stood.

She kissed him.
And behind them, the pink carnations swayed in the afternoon breeze.
