Chapter 8 - THE NIGHT THE ENGAGEMENT RING CAME OFF

Caroline invited us to dinner.

I knew it was a mistake before we arrived.

The table was set beautifully.

Candles.

Flowers.

Crystal glasses.

Heather sat beside her mother.

Claire was there too.

Lillian sat at the far end.

As always.

Caroline smiled when we entered.

“Mara, darling.”

I smiled politely.

“Caroline.”

Dinner began.

For twenty minutes, everyone pretended nothing had happened.

Then Caroline turned toward Heather.

Her hands moved beneath the table.

She's turning Daniel against us.

Heather answered.

She wants the money.

I looked directly at them.

Then raised my hands.

I have understood every insult since the first dinner.

Silence.

Caroline froze.

Heather's face went white.

Daniel stared.

I continued signing.

My parents were deaf. ASL was my first language.

Caroline's mouth opened.

I didn't stop.

You have spent months insulting me while smiling at my face.

Then I spoke aloud.

“And I'm done pretending it's acceptable.”

I stood.

Daniel reached for my hand.

“Mara.”

I looked at him.

Tears filled my eyes.

“I love you.”

His expression changed.

“But I need time to decide whether love is enough when your family has spent months making me feel unwelcome.”

I removed my engagement ring.

May you like

Placed it beside my plate.

And walked out.
