Chapter 7 - THE WOMAN THEY TRIED TO SILENCE

The trust documents revealed something troubling.

Caroline had been acting as though she possessed authority over Lillian's finances.

But the original trust gave Lillian significant decision-making rights.

A legal review became necessary.

Daniel arranged for an independent attorney experienced in elder law.

Lillian met with the attorney privately.

With a qualified interpreter of her choosing.

For the first time in years, she discussed her finances without Caroline controlling the conversation.

The attorney discovered discrepancies.

Unexplained transfers.

Unauthorized expenses.

And documents that required further investigation.

Daniel was devastated.

He had always believed his mother was helping his grandmother.

Now he understood that help could become control when nobody asked the person receiving it what they wanted.

One evening, he sat beside me.

“I should have noticed.”

I looked at him.

“Yes.”

He swallowed.

I continued.

“But noticing now matters only if you do something.”

May you like

Daniel nodded.

“I know.”
