Chapter 3 - THE SECRET WRITTEN IN THE WEDDING INVITATIONS

Lillian's notebook contained records of family conversations.

Not ordinary conversations.

Promises.

Agreements.

Things people had said when they thought she couldn't understand.

For decades, Caroline had controlled Lillian's access to information.

She decided which visitors could see her.

Which letters reached her.

Which family events she attended.

And which financial documents were placed before her.

Lillian had kept notes.

Dates.

Names.

Details.

I stared at the pages.

Why didn't you tell Daniel?

Lillian's expression softened.

He was a child when it began.

I swallowed.

He's not a child now.

She nodded.

No.

Then she handed me a wedding invitation.

Cream paper.

Gold lettering.

My name.

Daniel's name.

September twenty-first.

I frowned.

What's wrong with it?

Lillian pointed to a small line at the bottom.

Hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Grant Mercer.

I looked at her.

She signed:

Caroline ordered these without asking you.

My stomach tightened.

I hadn't approved invitations.

Hadn't chosen stationery.

Hadn't even finalized the guest list.

Lillian watched my face.

May you like

Then signed:

She is planning your wedding as if you are not part of it.
