Chapter 6 - THE LETTER HIDDEN IN THE CEDAR CHEST

Lillian invited us both to the sunroom.

Daniel sat beside me.

His grandmother looked at him.

Then signed:

Do you remember your grandfather?

Daniel nodded.

“Of course.”

Lillian smiled sadly.

She opened the cedar chest beside her chair.

Inside was an envelope.

Yellowed.

Sealed.

Addressed to Daniel.

His grandfather's handwriting.

Daniel stared.

“What's this?”

Lillian signed:

He wanted you to have it when you turned twenty-five.

Daniel frowned.

“I'm thirty-five.”

Lillian nodded.

I know.

He opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

His grandfather had written about the family's wealth.

About the responsibilities that came with it.

And about Lillian's independence.

He had established a trust to ensure she could make her own financial decisions.

Daniel read the final paragraph twice.

Then looked up.

“Grandma.”

Lillian nodded.

He swallowed.

“Why didn't I know about this?”

Her expression hardened.

May you like

Then she signed:

Ask your mother.
