Chapter 10 - THE MERCER FAMILY'S PUBLIC HUMILIATION

The truth became public during a family gathering in April.
Caroline had invited relatives to celebrate Grant's birthday.
She expected Daniel to attend.
He did.
But he brought Lillian.
And an interpreter.
Caroline's smile faltered.
“Mother, I didn't know you were coming.”
Lillian signed calmly.
I was invited.
Daniel translated.
Caroline looked around.
Several relatives were watching.
Then Lillian addressed the room.
Through the interpreter, she explained that she had moved into her own apartment.
That she was reviewing her finances.
And that she wanted future family gatherings to include accessible communication.
Caroline tried to interrupt.
Lillian raised one hand.
The room fell silent.
Then she signed:
I have been quiet for years. That does not mean I had nothing to say.
Daniel translated.
Nobody laughed.
May you like
Nobody looked away.
And for the first time, Caroline Mercer had to listen.
