Chapter 5 - THE FAMILY'S MOST EXPENSIVE LIE

Daniel confronted Caroline the next day.
I wasn't there.
He called me afterward.
His voice sounded different.
“Mara.”
I sat down.
“What happened?”
Silence.
Then he said, “She admitted it.”
My eyes filled.
“She did?”
He swallowed.
“She said she was only joking.”
I closed my eyes.
Daniel continued.
“She said you were too sensitive.”
I laughed bitterly.
“Of course.”
He hesitated.
“Then she said something else.”
My stomach tightened.
“What?”
Daniel's voice hardened.
“She said she didn't think you could understand.”
Silence.
I stared at the wall.
He continued.
“And when I asked why that would make it acceptable, she had no answer.”
My eyes filled.
For the first time, Daniel had seen what I'd been living with.
But the conversation didn't end there.
He asked about Lillian.
About the way she was ignored.
About the financial documents Caroline controlled.
And Caroline became furious.
Not embarrassed.
Not apologetic.
May you like
Furious.
Because Daniel had finally asked a question she couldn't dismiss.
