Chapter 11 - THE MAN WHO HAD TO EARN HER TRUST

Daniel didn't ask me to put the ring back on.
He didn't demand forgiveness.
He didn't tell me his mother meant well.
He apologized.
Then he changed his behavior.
He confronted cruelty when he saw it.
He made sure Lillian was included in family conversations.
He stopped excusing Caroline's comments.
And he began learning ASL.
We met for coffee occasionally.
Sometimes we talked about school.
Sometimes about his students.
Sometimes about nothing important.
Then one evening, he asked, “Do you still love me?”
I looked at him.
“Yes.”
His eyes filled.
“But I don't know if I trust you to stand beside me when things get difficult.”
He nodded.
“I understand.”
I swallowed.
“I need a partner, Daniel. Not someone who loves me privately and leaves me alone publicly.”

He looked down.
