Chapter 9 - The Federal Gavel of Justice

Six months later, Courtroom 1A of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania was packed to maximum capacity for the final sentencing hearing.

Sitting in the front row of the gallery were Harrison and Khloe.

Khloe looked radiant, healthy, and beautiful in a soft cream cashmere suit, holding six-month-old baby Grace in her arms. Grace was healthy, chubby-cheeked, with bright blue eyes, giggling softly as she clutched her uncle’s finger.

Vanessa Kensington and Richard Harrington sat at the defense table in bright orange federal prison jumpsuits, their hands and feet bound in heavy iron chains. Their former arrogance and wealth had been completely crushed by months in solitary detention.

Chief Judge Evelyn Sterling took the bench with severe, uncompromising moral authority.

"Vanessa Kensington, Richard Harrington," Judge Sterling declared, her voice echoing through the stone chamber. "You engaged in a calculated, depraved, and monstrous act of premeditated violence against a defenseless pregnant mother on the steps of this very court system."

Judge Sterling brought down her heavy wooden gavel with a resounding crack that resonated like thunder.

"Vanessa Kensington is hereby sentenced to twenty-five years at the State Correctional Institution, Muncy, without the possibility of early parole."

Vanessa collapsed forward onto the table, letting out a broken, hysterical wail as state marshals secured her transport chains.

"Richard Harrington, for your active conspiracy in attempted murder and multi-million-dollar corporate grand larceny, you are sentenced to fifteen years at the United States Penitentiary, Lewisburg, followed by full financial forfeiture of all assets."

Judge Sterling struck the gavel a second time.

"The marriage between Khloe Harrington and Richard Harrington is declared dissolved ab initio, with sole, exclusive, unchallengeable custody of Grace Cole awarded to the mother."

As the marshals hauled the two weeping convicts through the iron holding door forever, Khloe turned to her brother.

She wrapped her arm around Harrison’s neck, burying her face into his shoulder as tears of pure, unadulterated peace washed over her.

"Thank you, Harry," Khloe whispered. "You gave us our lives back."

Harrison smiled from the depths of his soul, kissing his sister’s forehead and gently tapping baby Grace’s nose.

"In this family, Khloe," Harrison said softly, "nobody ever touches what I love."
