Chapter 9 - The Scales of JusticeSix months later, Courtroom 8B of the United States District Court in Los Angeles was packed to capacity with international press, biotech industry leaders, and legal observers.

Judge Evelyn Wright presided over the final sentencing hearing in the matter of The United States versus Vanessa Whitmore and Nathan Cross.

Sitting in the front row of the gallery were Elena Vance-Whitmore and Adrian Whitmore. Elena held fourteen-month-old Lucas, who was laughing cheerfully and clapping his tiny hands, while Mia sat beside her father, her fingers laced securely through Adrian’s hand.

Judge Wright adjusted her spectacles and looked down from the bench with severe, uncompromising authority.

"Vanessa Whitmore, you have been convicted on all counts: Attempted First-Degree Capital Murder, Conspiracy to Commit Depraved Homicide, Systemic Financial Fraud, and Child Endangerment."

Judge Wright struck her gavel with a resounding crack that resonated like thunder through the silent courtroom.

"The court finds zero mitigating circumstances. Your actions represent a calculated, predatory assault on innocent human life driven by unbridled greed. You are hereby sentenced to Life Imprisonment without the possibility of parole, to be served at the California Institution for Women in Corona."

Vanessa collapsed onto the defense table, sobbing hysterically as her public defenders looked away in disgust.

"Nathan Cross, for your active participation in corporate sabotage and attempted homicide, you are sentenced to thirty-five years in federal penitentiary."

As the bailiffs stepped forward and clicked the heavy chains around Vanessa’s waist and ankles, she turned her tear-streaked face toward the gallery.

Elena did not flinch. She met Vanessa’s gaze with calm, unshakable dignity—the look of a woman who had walked through the valley of death, reclaimed her children, and restored truth to the world.
