Chapter 4 - The Hidden Time CapsuleThe Victorian dollhouse in the corner of the third-floor playroom was a masterpiece of miniature architecture—an exact replica of Whitmore Manor built by Claire for Mia’s second birthday.

Adrian, Elena, and Mia stood before it under the hum of the playroom lights. Outside, the rain lashed violently against the glass, matching the storm brewing within the walls of the estate.
Mia knelt on the carpet, reached into the miniature library on the dollhouse's second floor, and inserted the brass key into a hidden seam behind the tiny wooden fireplace.
With a soft click, the false back panel of the dollhouse popped forward.
Inside lay a small, velvet-lined steel case, waterproofed with industrial silicone.
Elena lifted the case and handed it directly to Adrian. "Open it."
Adrian’s hands were shaking so hard he nearly dropped the latch. He pulled open the lid, revealing three items:
A military-grade digital voice recorder bearing the logo of Cross Tactical Security.
A sealed glass vial containing three ounces of a clear, odorless chemical liquid labeled Compound T-94.
A handwritten spiral notebook in the unmistakable, elegant cursive of Claire Vance-Whitmore.
"Play the recorder," Elena instructed.
Adrian pressed the play button with a trembling thumb.
A burst of static filled the room, followed by the clear, unmistakable voice of Vanessa, recorded five years and three months earlier:
‘Make sure the brake cylinder is drained completely, Nathan. If she survives the fall, the impact on the rocks below Big Sur will finish her. Once Claire is gone, Adrian’s grief will make him completely malleable. Within a year, I will have his ring on my finger and full power of attorney over his biotech patents. You’ll get your three million in offshore crypto the day the probate closes.’
Then came Nathan Cross’s rough, gravelly voice: ‘Consider it done. What about the kid?’
‘The girl stays alive for now,’ Vanessa replied with chilling indifference. ‘Adrian’s devotion to the child is his only weakness. We use her to keep him bound to the estate.’
The audio clicked off.
Adrian fell to his knees on the carpet, burying his face in his hands as a ragged, agonizing sob tore from his chest. The woman he had married, the woman he had trusted with his children, was the monster who had tried to murder the love of his life.
"God forgive me..." Adrian wept, rocking back and forth. "I let her into our home... I let her touch our daughter..."
"Adrian, get up," Elena said firmly, her voice snapping him back to reality. "Vanessa knows the net is closing. Look at the vial in the box."
Adrian lifted the glass vial of Compound T-94. "What is this?"
"It’s a synthetic cardiac depressant developed by my former laboratory," Elena explained. "It mimics infantile respiratory failure and sudden infant death syndrome. It leaves no trace in standard blood screens unless specifically tested for heavy metal metabolites."
Elena looked toward the hallway. "That is what Vanessa was forcing into Lucas’s mouth tonight. Lucas is not Vanessa's biological child; she adopted him through a private agency three months ago to solidify her public image as a devoted mother. And tonight, she was preparing to sacrifice him to frame me."

Downstairs, the shrill sound of tires screeching against wet gravel echoed up the grand stairwell.
Vanessa was trying to run.
