Chapter 3 - The Ghost Behind the ScarsThe master study of Whitmore Manor was illuminated only by the dying embers of the hearth and the pale moonlight filtering through the French doors.

Adrian had ordered the security guards to stand watch outside the heavy double doors, barring anyone—including Vanessa—from entering. Mia sat curled in the corner of a deep leather sofa, holding a cup of warm milk and refusing to let go of Elena’s sleeve.
Adrian paced the length of the Persian rug, his hands running through his dark hair.
"Who are you?" Adrian demanded, stopping in front of Elena. "You arrived eight months ago with references from an agency in Chicago. You never gave a real background. Now my daughter claims you are Claire, and you claim my wife is a murderer. What kind of sick game are you playing?"
Elena reached up with steady hands. She unpinned the simple white maid's cap, letting her thick chestnut hair cascade past her shoulders. Then, she pulled a small alcohol swab from her uniform pocket and wiped away the heavy, flesh-toned camouflage foundation that covered the left side of her face and neck.
Beneath the makeup lay a network of fine, meticulously healed surgical scars tracing from her temple down to her collarbone.
Adrian’s eyes widened in profound shock.
"Five years ago," Elena began, her voice dropping the humble cadence of a servant and taking on the crisp, authoritative tone of a world-class biochemist, "my car did not lose control because of wet asphalt on Highway 1. The brake lines of my Lexus had been severed with industrial shears."
Adrian stumbled back against his desk. "Claire...?"
"When the car breached the guardrail, I managed to throw myself from the driver's door seconds before the vehicle hit the rocks and exploded in the surf," Elena continued, her voice trembling with five years of buried agony. "I was found three miles down the coast by a retired naval surgeon. I had fourteen broken bones, third-degree burns across my left torso, and a shattered facial structure."
She took a step toward Adrian.
"I spent two years in reconstructive surgery and physical rehabilitation under an assumed name. When I finally walked again and looked into what happened, I discovered that within six months of my 'death,' your personal assistant Vanessa had moved into my home, taken over my foundation, and married you."
Adrian’s hands began to shake violently. "Why didn't you come to me? Why didn't you call the police?!"
"Because Nathan Cross—the head of your private corporate security—was the one who cut the brake line," Elena said, her eyes flashing with righteous fire. "And Nathan answered directly to Vanessa. If I had walked into your office with a reconstructed face and no hard evidence, Vanessa would have finished the job in the hospital before I could ever hold my daughter again."
Elena knelt down beside Mia, wrapping her arms around the little girl who pressed her face into her neck, sobbing with pure relief.
"I came back as a maid to protect Mia," Elena whispered. "And to find the physical proof that would put Vanessa behind bars forever."

"Where is the proof?" Adrian asked, his voice barely a whisper.
Mia looked up from Elena’s shoulder, holding out the tarnished brass key. "In the dollhouse, Daddy. Behind Mommy’s garden wall."
