Chapter 7 - THE CHRISTMAS DINNER NOBODY EXPECTED

Mave was discharged on Christmas afternoon.

The doctor gave her instructions.

Rest.

Medication.

Follow-up appointments.

No heavy lifting.

Killeran offered to arrange transportation.

She accepted.

But when the car approached the Ashcroft estate, she frowned.

“Mr. Ashcroft?”

He looked at her.

“Yes?”

“This isn't my apartment.”

“I know.”

She stared.

He continued.

“The guest wing is available if you'd prefer somewhere with security while the police investigate.”

Mave hesitated.

“I don't want to impose.”

Killeran smiled faintly.

“You're not.”

She looked toward the mansion.

Then whispered, “Just until it's safe.”

He nodded.

“Of course.”

That evening, Killeran prepared dinner.

Or tried to.

He burned the potatoes.

Overcooked the chicken.

And somehow managed to ruin a simple green salad.

Mave watched from the kitchen doorway.

Her injured wrist rested against her chest.

“Sir?”

He turned.

“Yes?”

“Have you ever cooked before?”

Killeran looked at the smoking pan.

“Not successfully.”

Mave laughed.

A real laugh.

Warm.

Unexpected.

Killeran stared.

He'd heard her speak hundreds of times.

But he'd never heard her laugh.

May you like

And suddenly, the ruined dinner didn't seem like a disaster.

It seemed like the beginning of something.
