Chapter 3 - THE ENVELOPE MAILED TO CAMBRIDGE

The letters began three years earlier.

Every month, on the same date, Mave mailed a copy of the Ashcroft household log to a small office in Cambridge.

She used ordinary envelopes.

Paid for postage in cash.

And never included a return address.

The recipient was a retired forensic accountant named Eleanor Price.

Eleanor had once worked for the Massachusetts Attorney General's office.

Now she helped families investigate suspicious financial transactions.

Mave had met her after her brother's accident.

Rowan Donnelly had been sixteen when a delivery truck struck him near a warehouse owned by an Ashcroft subsidiary.

The police called it an accident.

The company paid a settlement.

Rowan survived.

But the injuries left him unable to walk without extensive rehabilitation.

Mave accepted the settlement.

Then began asking questions.

The truck's route didn't match its delivery schedule.

The driver disappeared.

The vehicle's maintenance records were altered.

And a witness who initially agreed to testify suddenly withdrew.

Mave suspected someone had concealed evidence.

So she applied for a housekeeping position at the Ashcroft estate.

She didn't expect to stay three years.

She didn't expect to learn the household's routines.

And she certainly didn't expect to become someone Killeran Ashcroft relied on without ever noticing.

But every month, she copied the duty log.

Because sometimes the names written beside ordinary household tasks matched names appearing in suspicious shipping records.

And Eleanor Price had been helping her connect them.
