Chapter 1 - THE ELEVEN-SECOND PHONE CALL

The automatic doors of St. Brendan's Emergency slid open at exactly midnight.
Killeran Ashcroft stepped inside.
He wore a black overcoat over a dark suit, his hair damp from the December rain.
He had come alone.
No driver.
No bodyguards.
No men carrying weapons beneath expensive jackets.
For a man whose name could empty a restaurant in Boston, he looked strangely ordinary.
Until the receptionist recognized him.
Her fingers stopped above the keyboard.
“Mr. Ashcroft?”
He approached the desk.
“I'm looking for Mave Donnelly.”
The receptionist glanced toward the treatment rooms.
“Are you family?”
Killeran hesitated.
For three years, Mave had worked in his house.
She had cleaned his rooms.
Prepared his tea.
Remembered his appointments.
And quietly made certain his life functioned without interruption.
But he didn't know her birthday.
Didn't know her favorite food.
Didn't know where she lived.
He barely knew anything about her.
“No,” he said finally.
The word tasted unpleasant.
“I'm her employer.”
The receptionist's expression softened.
“She's being treated. Please wait here.”
Killeran nodded.
He sat.
For the first time in years, he waited without demanding that someone hurry.
Twenty minutes later, a doctor approached.
“Mr. Ashcroft?”
He stood.
“Is she all right?”
The doctor studied him.
“She's stable. She has a fractured wrist, facial swelling, bruising, and a mild concussion.”
Killeran's jaw tightened.
“Car accident?”
The doctor hesitated.
“She says two vehicles blocked her car. Someone broke her window. She was assaulted.”
Silence.
Killeran stared.
Then asked quietly, “Can I see her?”
The doctor nodded.
“If she agrees.”
A few minutes later, Mave appeared behind a partially drawn curtain.
Her left wrist was braced.
One side of her face was swollen.
Her coat lay folded beside the bed.
When she saw him, her eyes widened.
“Mr. Ashcroft?”
He stopped.
She immediately tried to sit straighter.
“I'm sorry. I didn't think you'd actually come.”
Something tightened in his chest.
He approached slowly.
“Mave.”
She blinked.
He'd never used her name before.
“I came because you called.”
Her eyes filled.
“I only wanted to tell you I couldn't prepare breakfast.”
Killeran looked at her injuries.
May you like
Then said something she would remember for the rest of her life.
“Breakfast can wait.”
