Chapter 15 - THE HOUSE THAT FINALLY BECAME A HOME

Their wedding was held in the garden of the Ashcroft estate.

Small.

Quiet.

Beautiful.

Mave wore an ivory dress.

Rowan walked beside her, using a cane.

Every step was careful.

Every step was a victory.

When they reached Killeran, Rowan smiled.

“Take care of her.”

Killeran nodded.

“I will.”

Rowan leaned closer.

“And don't make her work on Christmas.”

Killeran laughed.

“Never again.”

The ceremony began.

When it was time for vows, Killeran took Mave's hands.

“I promise to listen.”

Her eyes filled.

“To respect your choices.”

“To tell you the truth.”

“And never to mistake your kindness for an obligation.”

Mave smiled through tears.

When it was her turn, she looked into his eyes.

“I spent years believing that being useful was the same as being loved.”

She squeezed his hands.

“Then you showed me that I didn't have to earn a place in someone's heart.”

Killeran's eyes filled.

Mave smiled.

“I choose you.”

The officiant pronounced them husband and wife.

Killeran kissed her.

And the garden filled with applause.

### FIVE YEARS LATER

Christmas morning arrived with snow.

The Ashcroft house was filled with laughter.

Mave stood in the kitchen wearing a red sweater.

Her five-year-old daughter, Holly, sat at the table decorating gingerbread cookies.

Their three-year-old son, Finn, was attempting to steal icing.

Rowan, now working as an accessibility consultant, sat nearby helping Holly arrange candy stars.

Killeran entered carrying coffee.

He kissed Mave's cheek.

“Morning.”

She smiled.

“Morning.”

He looked toward the children.

“Trouble?”

Mave laughed.

“Always.”

Holly looked up.

“Daddy?”

“Yes, princess?”

“How did you meet Mommy?”

Killeran smiled.

He looked at Mave.

Then answered.

“She called me on Christmas Eve.”

Holly frowned.

“Why?”

Mave smiled softly.

“Because I needed help.”

Holly considered that.

Then asked, “Did Daddy come?”

Killeran nodded.

“Immediately.”

Holly grinned.

“Good.”

Mave laughed.

Killeran wrapped an arm around her.

For a moment, he remembered the hospital.

The Christmas tree in the lobby.

The eleven-second phone call.

The woman apologizing for being late.

And the realization that he'd spent three years living in a house without truly seeing the people inside it.

He kissed Mave's forehead.

“Happy?”

She looked around.

Her husband.

Her children.

Her brother.

The home they'd built.

Then she smiled.

“Very.”

Outside, snow fell softly over Boston.

Inside, gingerbread cookies disappeared.

Children laughed.

And Killeran Ashcroft, once one of the most feared men in the city, finally understood something.

The greatest Christmas gift he'd ever received wasn't something wrapped beneath a tree.

It was an eleven-second phone call that taught him how to love.
