Chapter 2 - THE WOMAN WHO APOLOGIZED FOR BLEEDING

Mave didn't know what to do with Killeran Ashcroft sitting beside her hospital bed.

He looked too large for the plastic chair.

Too expensive for the fluorescent room.

Too dangerous for the ordinary kindness of a nurse bringing warm blankets.

And yet he remained.

For nearly an hour, he said very little.

He asked whether she needed water.

Whether the doctor had explained her injuries.

Whether someone had contacted her family.

Mave answered politely.

Then apologized again.

“I'm sorry for disturbing your Christmas.”

Killeran looked at her.

“Stop apologizing.”

She flinched.

He noticed immediately.

His expression softened.

“I didn't mean that as an order.”

Mave looked down.

He continued.

“You were hurt. You called someone you knew. There's nothing wrong with that.”

Her eyes filled.

“I didn't know who else to call.”

Killeran stared.

The sentence unsettled him.

Not because it was dramatic.

Because she said it so simply.

As though being alone was something she'd accepted long ago.

He looked toward her injured wrist.

“Did you recognize the men?”

Mave hesitated.

“No.”

“Did they take anything?”

She shook her head.

“Not my purse.”

“Your car?”

“They left it.”

Killeran frowned.

“Then what did they want?”

Mave looked away.

For a moment, he thought she wouldn't answer.

Then she whispered, “I think they wanted me to stop sending the letters.”

Killeran went still.

“What letters?”

May you like

Mave closed her eyes.

And said nothing.
