Chapter 5 - THE SECRET INSIDE THE HOUSEHOLD LOG

Harbor Nine.

Killeran knew the name.

It was an old distribution facility near the waterfront.

His father had purchased it twenty years earlier.

The warehouse had been closed for nearly five years.

At least, officially.

Killeran looked at Mave.

“Why were you investigating my household?”

She closed her eyes.

For a moment, she expected anger.

Then she told him the truth.

Everything.

The accident.

The altered records.

The missing driver.

The letters.

The accountant in Cambridge.

And the reason she'd applied for the job.

Killeran listened without interrupting.

When she finished, she whispered, “I know you can fire me.”

He stared.

“Fire you?”

She nodded.

“I lied about why I wanted the position.”

Killeran looked toward her injured wrist.

Then back at her face.

“You came into my house because you believed someone connected to my business hurt your brother.”

Mave nodded.

“Yes.”

“And you've been collecting evidence for three years.”

“Yes.”

He was silent.

Then asked, “Did you find anything?”

Mave hesitated.

“Yes.”

Killeran leaned forward.

“What?”

She swallowed.

“A name.”

“Whose?”

May you like

Mave looked at him.

“Your uncle.”
