Chapter 14 - A CHRISTMAS PROMISE WITHOUT CONDITIONS

Two years later, Killeran proposed.
On Christmas Eve.
Not in a ballroom.
Not in front of wealthy guests.
Not with a public announcement.
He proposed in the kitchen.
The same kitchen where Mave had once prepared his tea every morning.
A Christmas tree glowed beside the window.
Rowan was visiting.
He could now walk short distances with assistance.
Mave had baked gingerbread stars.
Killeran stood beside the counter.
Nervous.
Mave noticed.
“Are you all right?”
He laughed.
“Not particularly.”
She smiled.
“Why?”
He reached into his pocket.
Removed a small velvet box.
Mave froze.
“Killeran.”
He lowered himself onto one knee.
“Mave Donnelly.”
Her eyes filled.
“Three years ago, you called me from a hospital because you were worried about breakfast.”
He swallowed.
“I should have known your name long before that night.”
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
Killeran continued.
“You taught me that a home isn't a building.”
“It's the people inside it.”
He opened the box.
Inside was a simple diamond ring.
“I love you.”
“And I want to spend the rest of my life making sure you never have to apologize for needing someone.”
Mave laughed through tears.
“Yes.”
Killeran's eyes widened.
“Really?”
She nodded.
“Yes, Killeran.”
He stood.
She threw her arms around him.
And kissed him.
Behind them, Rowan shouted.
May you like
“FINALLY!”
They burst out laughing.
