Chapter 7 - THE WOMAN WHO REFUSED HIS MONEY

The following morning, Liam offered Clara one million dollars.
She stared.
“What?”
“One million.”
“For what?”
“Leave Chicago. Take your brother. Go somewhere safe.”
Clara looked at him.
“You want me to disappear?”
“I want you alive.”
She crossed her arms.
“Then tell me what's happening.”
Liam's jaw tightened.
“It's complicated.”
“Try me.”
He looked away.
“Victor Sloane wants me dead.”
Clara froze.
“Your friend?”
Liam nodded.
“And I think he killed my brother.”
She stared.
“Then call the police.”
Liam laughed bitterly.
“You don't understand.”
“Then explain.”
He looked at her.
“Victor knows everything about my organization.”
Clara stepped closer.
“Then stop protecting the organization.”
Liam stared.
She continued.
“Your brother died trying to expose something. You nearly died because of it. Now someone tried to kill us.”
Her voice trembled.
“How many people have to suffer before you decide this life isn't worth keeping?”
Liam looked at her.
For a long moment, he said nothing.
Then whispered, “You sound like Noah.”
May you like
Clara's eyes filled.
“Maybe you should have listened to him.”
