Chapter 12 - THE PRICE OF SAVING A MONSTER

Tommy's treatment began showing encouraging results.
Clara cried when the doctors explained that his latest tests indicated a strong response.
But his recovery remained uncertain.
There would be more treatment.
More monitoring.
More difficult days.
Still, for the first time in months, Clara felt hope.
Liam asked about Tommy often.
He didn't try to control the medical decisions.
Didn't offer secret cash.
Instead, he helped Clara connect with legitimate patient-assistance organizations and financial counselors.
When she finally resigned from her private nursing position, Liam looked devastated.
But he understood.
Clara needed to return to her own life.
And he needed to continue recovery without depending on her emotionally or medically.

“Your new nurse starts tomorrow.”
Liam nodded.
“Does she insult patients?”
Clara laughed.
“Only when necessary.”
He smiled.
Then looked at her.
“Will I see you again?”
Clara hesitated.
“Maybe.”
He nodded.
“I'll take maybe.”
She stepped closer.
Then kissed his cheek.
“Get better, Liam.”
His eyes filled.
“I'll try.”

Clara walked out.
And for the first time, Liam Mercer let someone leave without trying to stop them.
