Chapter 1 - THE ANNIVERSARY HE GAVE TO ANOTHER WOMAN

At 12:07 a.m., Nora Bellamy realized her husband had not merely forgotten their tenth anniversary.

He was celebrating it with another woman.

The twenty-three-second video showed Evan Carlisle kissing Camille Dane in a Manhattan rooftop lounge while Nora sat alone in their Connecticut home, surrounded by cold food, dying candles, and the ultrasound photograph she'd intended to give him.

Ten years of marriage.

Three miscarriages.

Six fertility specialists.

And one heartbeat she'd finally heard that morning.

Nora stared at the screen until it went black.

Then she placed her palm against her stomach.

“I'm sorry,” she whispered.

Behind her, Leonard Gray stood in the doorway.

The elderly caretaker had worked for the Carlisle family for decades.

He had seen Nora arrive as a hopeful twenty-seven-year-old bride.

He had watched her become the woman who quietly held the household together while Evan built his empire.

And tonight, he saw something in her face that frightened him.

“Mrs. Carlisle?”

“Nora,” she corrected gently.

Leonard lowered his eyes.

“Would you like me to stay?”

She shook her head.

“No. Thank you.”

When he left, Nora opened the cream-colored envelope.

The ultrasound photograph lay inside.

She studied the tiny shape.

For months, she'd imagined this moment.

Evan lifting her off the floor.

Laughing.

Crying.

Calling his mother.

Promising their child everything.

Now she couldn't imagine telling him at all.

Her phone vibrated.

A message from Evan.

Still in Manhattan. Long night. Love you.

Nora stared at those final two words.

Love you.

She wondered how many lies could fit inside eight letters.

Then she opened her laptop.

Not to scream.

Not to confront him.

To find the name of the divorce attorney she'd once recommended to a friend.

At 1:16 a.m., Nora sent an email.

At 1:23, she removed her wedding ring.

At 1:41, she began packing.

And at 2:08, she made the first decision of her adult life that had nothing to do with Evan Carlisle.

She chose herself.
