Chapter 14 - THE PROMISE HE MADE ON ONE KNEE

Liam proposed two years later.
Tommy was in remission and continuing follow-up care.
Clara had returned to hospital nursing.
Liam had completed a long rehabilitation program and continued managing the lasting effects of his injuries.
He walked with a cane on difficult days.
Some days, he still needed help.
But he no longer treated needing help as humiliation.
He had also built a new life.
A legitimate business.
A smaller home.
And a relationship with Clara based on choice rather than obligation.
One evening, they stood in a garden overlooking Lake Michigan.
The sky was pink.
The air smelled of roses.
Liam looked nervous.
Clara noticed.
“What's wrong?”
“Nothing.”
She raised an eyebrow.
“Liam.”
He sighed.
“I'm trying to do something romantic.”
She laughed.
“Should I be concerned?”
“Possibly.”
He reached into his pocket.
Then carefully lowered himself onto one knee, using the nearby bench for support.
Clara gasped.
“Liam!”
He smiled.
“I'm fine.”
“Your leg—”
“Clara.”
She stopped.
He opened a small velvet box.
Inside was a simple diamond ring.
His voice trembled.
“You kept me alive when I didn't want to be.”
Tears filled her eyes.
“But you also taught me something.”
He swallowed.
“Being alive isn't the same as living.”
Clara began crying.
Liam continued.
“I spent years believing power meant never needing anyone.”
He smiled sadly.
“Then you walked into my room, refused to be afraid of me, and taught me that love doesn't make a man weak.”
His eyes filled.
“It gives him something worth becoming better for.”
Clara covered her mouth.
“Will you marry me?”
She laughed through tears.
“Yes.”
Liam closed his eyes.
“Thank God.”
She helped him stand.

Then kissed him.
And for the first time, the man who once ruled half of Chicago understood that the greatest victory of his life had nothing to do with fear.
