Chapter 11 - THE NURSE WHO WOULDN'T RUN

Victor was arrested after investigators connected him to the attacks and financial crimes.
The investigation also uncovered evidence relating to Noah's disappearance.
Liam cooperated with authorities.
He provided records.
Testified.
And began dismantling the criminal operations he'd once controlled.
It was not easy.
He faced scrutiny for his own past.
Lost assets.
Lost allies.
And learned that leaving a violent world required more than declaring he was finished.
Clara watched him change.
Slowly.
Imperfectly.
But genuinely.
He continued rehabilitation.
Learned to manage his pain.
And began walking short distances with assistance.
Some days were good.
Others were terrible.
On the bad days, he still became angry.
But he no longer threw things.
He apologized when he spoke harshly.
And he listened when Clara told him he was being impossible.
One afternoon, he looked at her.
“Why are you still here?”
Clara smiled.
“Because you're not dead yet.”
He laughed.
Then his expression softened.
“Clara.”
“Yes?”
“I think I'm falling in love with you.”
She went still.
For a long moment, neither spoke.
Then she whispered, “Liam, I'm your nurse.”
He nodded.
“I know.”
“And you're still recovering.”
“I know.”
She looked at him.
“Then let's not confuse gratitude with love.”
Liam swallowed.
“Okay.”
Clara smiled sadly.
“If what you feel is real, it'll still be there when I'm no longer responsible for your care.”
May you like
He nodded.
“I can wait.”
