Chapter 14 - THE HUSBAND WHO LEARNED TO ASK

Six months later, Nico invited me to dinner.
Not a business dinner.
Not a family obligation.
A date.
He chose a quiet restaurant overlooking the river.
When I arrived, he stood.
“You look beautiful.”
I smiled.
“Thank you.”
We talked for hours.
About books.
Travel.
My university classes.
His childhood.
And the future.
At the end of the evening, Nico looked at me.
“Nora.”
I raised an eyebrow.
“Yes?”
“I know our marriage began in the worst possible way.”
I swallowed.
He continued.
“I can't change that.”
“No.”
“But I can ask whether you'd ever consider starting over.”
I looked at him.
“As what?”
He smiled faintly.
“As two people who actually get to choose each other.”
My eyes filled.
I thought about the wedding.
The fear.
The scars.
The gunshot.
The investigation.
The months of healing.
Then I smiled.
“One date at a time.”
May you like
Nico laughed softly.
“I can do that.”
