Chapter 11 - THE WOMAN WHO REFUSED TO BE A PRISONER

Nico offered me a choice.
I could remain in the penthouse.
Move into a separate apartment.
Or leave New York entirely.
I chose a small apartment overlooking the Hudson.
For the first time, I had a front door nobody else controlled.
I began seeing a therapist.
I enrolled in a university program I'd abandoned years earlier.
And I started rebuilding my life.
Nico visited occasionally.
Only when I invited him.
He brought flowers.
Books.
And once, a terrible homemade cake that tasted like burnt sugar.
I laughed so hard I cried.
Nico stared.
“What?”
I shook my head.
“You're a terrible baker.”
He smiled.
“Apparently.”
For the first time, I saw him as something other than a mafia boss.
A man.
Imperfect.
May you like
Trying.
And learning.
