Chapter 6 - THE HOUSE VINCENT BOUGHT FOR SOPHIA

Vincent returned to the mansion for the first time three days later.
Everything was spotless.
The floors gleamed.
The furniture stood perfectly arranged.
There wasn't a single object out of place.
And the house felt unbearable.
He walked into Claire's bedroom.
Her perfume lingered faintly.
A book rested beside the bed.
A folded cardigan lay over a chair.
Then he opened the dresser.
Inside was a small white box.
He lifted the lid.
Tiny baby socks.
White.
Soft.
Untouched.
Beneath them was a handwritten note.
For our little miracle.
Vincent sat on the edge of the bed.
For a long time, he couldn't move.
He remembered buying Sophia a luxury sports car.
He remembered purchasing her a house.
He remembered dismissing Claire when she asked why.
And now he was sitting in the room where his wife had hidden a pair of baby socks because she'd been afraid to tell him she was pregnant.

Vincent covered his face.
Then cried.
