Chapter 13 - THE FATHER WHO LEARNED TO STAY
Elena finally came home.
She was still small.
Still required careful follow-up.
But her doctors were encouraged by her progress.
Vincent learned everything he could.
How to prepare bottles safely.
How to recognize signs of illness.
How to follow the pediatrician's instructions.
How to comfort a crying baby.
He attended parenting classes.
He asked questions.
He made mistakes.
And when Claire corrected him, he listened.
One evening, Elena fell asleep against his chest.
Vincent looked at Claire.
“She's beautiful.”
Claire smiled.
“Yes.”
He hesitated.
“Like you.”
Claire looked away.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Vincent said:
“I know I don't deserve another chance.”
Claire looked at him.
He continued.
“And I'm not asking you to forget.”
Her eyes filled.
“I can't forget, Vincent.”
He nodded.
“I know.”
She looked toward Elena.
“But I hope you keep being this father.”
May you like
Vincent swallowed.
“I will.”
