Chapter 5 - THE SECRET IN THE HOSPITAL RECORDS
Claire's attorney arrived that afternoon.
Her name was Rebecca Sloan.
She carried a leather briefcase and spoke with the confidence of someone who wasn't impressed by powerful men.
“Mr. Moretti.”
Vincent stood.
“Where is my wife's medical information?”
Rebecca looked at him.
“Claire authorized her physicians to communicate with me regarding certain decisions.”
Vincent frowned.
“I'm her husband.”
“Yes.”
Rebecca paused.
“But marriage doesn't erase her right to make decisions about her own care.”
Vincent looked away.
Rebecca continued.
“She also prepared legal documents several weeks ago.”
His stomach tightened.
“What documents?”
“Divorce paperwork, estate planning instructions, and arrangements for the baby's care if she became unable to act.”
Vincent stared.
“She knew something might happen?”
Rebecca shook her head.
“She knew childbirth carries risks. And she wanted to protect her child.”
He looked down.
“She didn't trust me.”
Rebecca studied him.
“Mr. Moretti, trust is not something a person owes you because you married them.”
