Chapter 9 - THE HOSPITAL WITH NO WINDOWS

Tommy eventually traced Elisa's movements to a private medical facility in Pennsylvania.

It operated under a different name.

The building was isolated.

Its records were incomplete.

Several former employees described unusual security arrangements.

A woman matching Elisa's description had been treated there for months.

She suffered from injuries sustained in a serious vehicle accident.

She had difficulty remembering events.

And she repeatedly asked about her baby.

One former nurse remembered her clearly.

“She cried every night.”

Dante listened.

The nurse continued.

“She kept saying someone had taken her daughter.”

His hands trembled.

“Where is she now?”

The nurse hesitated.

“She was transferred.”

“To where?”

The woman looked down.

“I don't know.”

Dante felt his chest tighten.

Then the nurse added:

“But she left something behind.”

She handed him a small envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

Elisa.

Sitting in a wheelchair.

Holding a stuffed nightingale.

On the back, in shaky handwriting, were four words.

DANTE, I AM ALIVE.
