Chapter 5 - THE WOMAN WHO WASN'T DEAD

The investigation began with the crash.
Tommy obtained archived records.
Police reports.
Emergency response logs.
Hospital admissions.
The official account stated that Elisa Romano died at the scene.
But the medical examiner's records contained discrepancies.
The body had been identified primarily through jewelry and clothing.
DNA testing had not been completed before burial.
The death certificate had been issued based on information supplied by Lorenzo Bellini.
Dante stared at the documents.
He felt sick.
Then Tommy uncovered something else.
A woman matching Elisa's description had been admitted to a private rehabilitation facility three days after the crash.
She was registered under a false name.
Anna Bell.
The admission record described severe injuries, memory impairment, and limited mobility.
The facility had received payments from a company linked to Lorenzo.
Dante's heart pounded.
“Where is she?”
Tommy looked at him.
“The facility closed four months ago.”
Dante stared.
“Where did the patients go?”
“That's what we're trying to find out.”
Dante stood.
His chair scraped across the floor.
“Find her.”
Tommy nodded.
But before he left, he hesitated.
“Boss?”
Dante looked up.
“There's something else.”
“What?”
Tommy swallowed.
“The woman buried as Elisa…”

He paused.
“Her identity was never established.”
