Chapter 3 - THE SILVER NIGHTINGALE

Dante wanted to confront Lorenzo immediately.
Camilla stopped him.
“If you go back to the mansion angry, he'll know.”
Dante stared at her.
“He already knows what he did.”
“But he doesn't know you found Lucia.”
The words made him pause.
Camilla continued.
“That's the only advantage we have.”
Dante looked toward the sleeping baby.
He had spent eight months believing she was dead.
He would not risk losing her again.
“What do you suggest?”
“Get her somewhere safe. Then find evidence.”
Dante nodded slowly.
He contacted Tommy Grimaldi through a secure number.
Tommy arrived forty minutes later.
When he saw Lucia, he stopped in the doorway.
His face drained.
“Boss?”
Dante looked at him.
“Meet my daughter.”
Tommy stared.
Then whispered:
“Jesus Christ.”
Dante handed him the hospital bracelet.
Tommy examined it.
“Where did she come from?”
Camilla explained.
Tommy listened carefully.
Then asked the question nobody else had voiced.
“What about Elisa?”
The room fell silent.
Dante looked up.
“What?”
Tommy swallowed.
“If Lorenzo falsified the baby's death, how do we know the rest of the story is true?”
Dante felt something tighten inside his chest.
Elisa's body had been identified.
He remembered the silver nightingale necklace.
Her wedding ring.
Her hair.
But the body had been badly burned.
And Lorenzo had insisted Dante not view her face.
You don't want that memory.
Dante had believed him.
Now he remembered something else.
Elisa's nightingale pendant had a tiny flaw.
One wing was slightly bent.
He had noticed it the day he bought it.
The necklace recovered from the crash had been perfect.
At the time, he'd assumed the jeweler repaired it.
Now he wasn't sure.
Dante looked at Tommy.
“Find the original medical examiner's report.”
Tommy nodded.
“And the jewelry evidence.”

Dante's voice dropped.
“I want to know whose body we buried.”
