Chapter 7 - THE MAID WHO BECAME A TARGET

Lorenzo realized something was wrong when Dante failed to return to the mansion.

At first, he assumed grief had driven his boss away.

Then he learned Tommy had requested archived medical records.

And that someone had reopened the crash investigation.

Lorenzo understood immediately.

The secret was unraveling.

He began searching for Camilla Ferrara.

She had worked at the mansion for two years.

Quiet.

Reliable.

Invisible.

Exactly the kind of employee Lorenzo had never bothered noticing.

Now he remembered seeing her at the private clinic.

His blood ran cold.

He contacted a trusted associate.

“Find the maid.”

The man asked:

“What do you want done?”

Lorenzo hesitated.

Then said:

“Bring her to me.”

But Camilla was no longer at the mansion.

Tommy had arranged a secure temporary residence for her, Rosie, Teresa, and Lucia.

The location was known only to a small number of people.

Dante visited every day.

He learned how to hold Lucia.

How to prepare her bottle.

How to recognize when she was tired.

How to soothe her when she cried.

He had missed her first eight months.

He refused to miss another moment.

One evening, Camilla found him sitting beside Lucia's crib.

He was reading a children's book aloud.

His voice was low.

Gentle.

Nothing like the voice that once terrified entire rooms.

Camilla smiled.

“She likes that one.”

Dante looked up.

“Does she?”

Camilla nodded.

“Rosie picked it.”

He smiled faintly.

Then looked at her.

“Thank you.”

Camilla shook her head.

May you like

“You don't have to keep saying that.”

“Yes,” Dante said quietly. “I do.”
