Chapter 9 - The Eviction of Barbara Whitmore

By 2:00 PM, the board of directors of Whitmore Freight had completed its historic transformation.
By a unanimous 9–0 vote:
Evan Whitmore was formally terminated as Chief Executive Officer with cause, forfeiting all severance packages, stock options, and executive pensions.
The board ratified a civil recovery action seizing Evan’s 5% non-voting common shares to offset the $2.8 million in stolen funds.
Clara Vance was formally ratified as Executive Chairwoman and President of Whitmore Freight.
Downstairs in the executive parking garage, Barbara Whitmore stood beside her leased Mercedes sedan, sobbing hysterically as a repossession tow truck hooked its chains onto the front axle.
“You can’t take this car!” Barbara screamed at the repo driver. “I am Barbara Whitmore! My son is a billionaire!”
“The lease was held in the name of Whitmore Freight, lady,” the driver replied without looking up. “Account is delinquent. Company cancelled the contract three hours ago. Hand over the keys.”
I walked down the concrete ramp accompanied by Naomi Price and Officer Kane.
Barbara saw me and lunged forward, her sable coat dragging in the oil stains on the garage floor. “Clara! Look at what you’ve done! You’ve ruined my son! You’ve thrown me onto the street! We gave you eleven years of our lives!”
I stopped three feet from her, looking down at the ruined matriarch who had spent a decade treating me like an expendable servant.
“You didn't give me eleven years, Barbara,” I said softly, my voice filled with unbreakable peace. “You took eleven years of my kindness, my patience, and my father’s wealth. You called me barren. You told the world I wasn't good enough for your son.”
I pulled a crisp twenty-dollar bill from my coat pocket and dropped it onto the hood of her repossessed car.

“Here is your bus fare back to Cicero, Barbara. It’s more than you ever gave me.”
Barbara collapsed against the concrete pillar, weeping bitter, humiliating tears as the tow truck pulled away, leaving her stranded in the exhaust fumes of her shattered pride.
