Chapter 6 - The Chairwoman's Gavel

The 40th-floor boardroom was an arena of suffocating tension.

Surrounding the thirty-foot polished ebony table were the nine senior directors of Whitmore Freight, the heads of logistics operations, and the chief legal representatives of the company’s primary maritime lenders.

At the head of the table sat Clara Vance.

I wore a tailored charcoal blazer over an ivory silk blouse, my hair pulled back in an elegant, severe twist. Before me lay the original brass corporate seal and my father’s antique walnut gavel.

The heavy mahogany double doors opened, and Evan marched in, breathing heavily, followed by Barbara, whose sable coat seemed suddenly absurd in the sterile, corporate atmosphere.

“Clara!” Evan shouted, trying to regain his commanding executive posture. “What is the meaning of this circus?! You cannot stage a coup in my boardroom!”

I didn't blink. I picked up the walnut gavel and brought it down against the sounding block with a single, sharp crack that silenced the entire room.

“Take a seat at the visitor end of the table, Mr. Whitmore,” I said, my voice quiet, level, and colder than Arctic ice. “Or Officer Kane will remove you for trespassing on corporate property.”

Evan looked around the table, desperately searching the faces of the board members he had entertained at country clubs for six years. Director Hastings looked at the carpet. Director Vance-Cole stared straight ahead. Not a single person rose to defend him.

“Clara, we are husband and wife!” Barbara shrieked from the back of the room. “We built this family!”

“We were divorced yesterday, Barbara,” I replied, looking directly into her eyes. “And you were never family. You were simply an expensive recurring expense.”

I turned to Naomi Price. “Counsel, please present Exhibit Alpha.”
