Chapter 7 - The 2.8 Million Dollar Paper Trail

Naomi Price connected an encrypted tablet to the central projection system.
The giant digital displays along the boardroom walls lit up with high-resolution bank records, wire transfer receipts, and shell corporation registration documents.
“Over the past twenty-four months,” Naomi announced, her voice echoing with clinical precision, “Evan Whitmore executed forty-two unauthorized transfers totaling $2,840,000 from Whitmore Freight’s emergency capital reserve account into Sterling & Horizon Consulting LLC.”
Director Hastings leaned forward, his brow furrowed in outrage. “What services did this consultancy provide to our freight network?”
“None,” Naomi answered plainly. She clicked to the next slide.
High-resolution invoices flashed across the screen:
Invoice #104: $420,000 down payment for Unit 18B at the River North Glass Towers (Deeded solely to Miss Kelsey Adams).
Invoice #118: $85,000 for private concierge maternity suites and European designer nursery furnishings.
Invoice #129: $140,000 in personal American Express charges incurred by Mrs. Barbara Whitmore for luxury spa resorts and jewelry in St. Moritz.
The board members gasped in disgust.
“That was executive compensation!” Evan yelled, slamming his fists onto the table, sweat soaking through his shirt collar. “I doubled company revenue over the last four years! I was entitled to discretionary bonuses!”
“Discretionary bonuses require prior compensation committee approval, Evan,” I said, looking him dead in the eye. “Instead, you hid the wires by categorizing them as 'diesel fuel hedge allocations' and forged my late father’s digital approval token.”
Senior Assistant District Attorney Karen Vance stepped out from the adjoining advisory suite, holding a red-jacketed federal warrant.

“Mr. Whitmore, Mrs. Whitmore,” Prosecutor Vance stated calmly. “A grand jury was convened this morning. You are facing eleven counts of Corporate Embezzlement, Wire Fraud, Aggravated Tax Evasion, and Falsification of Commercial Records.”
Evan sank into his chair, clutching his head in both hands as the walls of his manufactured kingdom caved in on him.
